Playboy Magazine was founded by Hugh Hefner was born on April 9, 1926. The first issue was published in November of 1953. The issue had no date on it, as Mr. Heifer was unsure if there would ever be a second issue. Luckily there was.
Heifer originally intended the magazine to be called StagParty but switched to Playboy when Stag Magazine threatened legal action. Self-billed as "Entertainment for Men" and features articles on a wide variety of issues; reviews of movies, books, music, cars, sports and new gadgets; interesting and in-depth interviews; and last, but not least, pictorials of beautiful women. Eventually, Playboy branched out and published books, videos, special pictorial issues, and more recently, designer apparel.
The centerfold evolved over the years. The first two centerfolds were only single page photographs. The third issue, February 1954, was the first two-page centerfold. The famous three page fold out centerfold made it's first appearance in the March 1956 issue (with Marian Stafford). In October 1985, the physical format of the magazine changed; instead of being held together by staples, the magazine was produced with the "perfect" or flat binding. So now the centerfold is attached to the magazine at top of the centerfold, instead of stapled in the first fold. Thus if the magazine was closed with the centerfold unfolded, two pages would stick out, instead of one.
I can't find the March 1955 issue of Playboy?
There isn't one. Playboy was not able to meet the publishing deadline for the March issue, so they published the late March issue as the April issue and have continued to publish issues a month early every since then.

Rumor was that the number of stars represented either the number of times Hugh Heifer had slept with the Playmate of the Month, or his rating of how good she was in bed. Officially, however, the stars represent the advertising region for that magazine.
